Grief'd Up: Getting Real About Loss, One Episode at a Time

Aug 04, 2024

A note from our founder, Rebecca Feinglos, on why she’s started the podcast Grief'd Up:

Grief is so damn isolating. I remember feeling like “the kid with a dead mom” at school, and doing my best to be perceived as anything but that. I remember going to bed that first night after my father died, literally lying next to my (now ex) husband, and feeling like no one in the entire world was there. And, speaking of divorce, when I went through mine, even though I knew it was absolutely the right thing to do for my own wellbeing, I felt like I had a giant arrow pointing at me calling out my status as a divorcee-- that I was so incredibly different from everyone else.

Y’all. That’s not real. The way our society treats grief tricks you into thinking you’re the only one who’s ever gone through it. We can’t change the fact that we’ll grieve in our lifetime, but we can change that feeling of isolation. How do we do that? By talking about grief-- loudly. Right now, conversations around grief tend to be hushed. These are the talks we have with our best friends and family, behind closed doors.

And if there's one thing I've learned while building Grieve Leave and this amazing community, it's that we need to keep busting down those doors. People are hungry for more conversations about grief. They're craving that "me too" moment, that sigh of relief when you realize you're not alone in your feelings.

That's exactly what Grief'd Up is all about. It's the podcast I wish I'd had when I was in the depths of my own grief. It's the conversations I longed to hear, the stories I needed to know weren't just my own. (An Uber driver once I've been told I have a good voice and I should do a podcast. It was creepy, at the time. But now, look at me!)

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention other leaders in this space that let me know that a podcast about grief was absolutely something I could do. So I want to shoutout some OGs:. Amber of The Grief Gang and Nora McInerney of "Terrible, Thanks for Asking," I'm looking at you. Your work has been a beacon, lighting the way for more open, honest conversations about loss. Thank you.

So, what can you expect from Grief'd Up?

Each episode, we'll dive deep into the messy, complicated, and sometimes absurdly hilarious world of grief. We'll chat with experts, share personal stories, and hopefully make you feel a little less alone in your own grief journey. And because this is real life, you'll get the full experience - my tears, my unfiltered cackle that apparently is like my late mother’s, and even my dogs chiming in with the occasional background bark (they have a lot of thoughts about grief, tbh).

Here's the first 5 episodes you can binge right away (stay tuned for more, soon!):

  1. Redefining End-of-Life Care with Jamie Thrower  (Spotify & Apple Podcasts) -- Jamie gets real about what a death doula actually does (spoiler: it's way more than you think).

  2. Dreaming Big, Grieving Bigger with Jacob Tobia  (Spotify & Apple Podcasts) -  Jacob opens up about grieving in Hollywood, gender identity, and why resilience isn't all it's cracked up to be.

  3. The Intersection of Divorce and Grief with Erin Levine (Spotify & Apple Podcasts) - Erin shares insights on how divorce and grief intertwine, and why the legal system needs an overhaul.

  4. Navigating Pet Loss with Beth Bigler (Spotify & Apple Podcasts) - Beth breaks down why losing a pet hurts so much, and how to deal with people who just don't understand.

  5. From Personal Grief to Professional Guidance with Shea Wingate (Spotify & Apple Podcasts) Shea gets vulnerable about losing both parents young and how it led her to become the Grief Girlie.

Each episode is packed with raw honesty, practical advice, and those "me too" moments that remind us we're not alone in our grief. Whether you're actively grieving, supporting someone who is, or just want to be better prepared for the inevitable losses life brings, there's something here for you.
